Photographing Private Hospitals, from the Façade to the Operating Room

Projects Covered

These commissions came from private hospitals in Turkey before the studio moved to Madrid. They include several branches of one private hospital group in different cities and a separate private hospital. Each one was a different brief, but together they cover almost every kind of space a hospital has, from the façade and public areas to intensive care, operating rooms (operating theatres), imaging suites and an IVF laboratory. Tarik Kaan Muslu photographed all of them himself.

The Brief

The hospitals needed images for their websites, brochures and patient information, and to present new buildings and refurbished units. The images had to show that the spaces were modern and clean, and that the equipment was current, without showing any patient.

The Challenge

Hospitals do not close

Every hospital was in operation during the shoots. Corridors, waiting areas and reception desks were in use, and operating rooms and scanners worked to their own schedules.

Clinical areas have their own rules

Intensive care, operating rooms and laboratories each have access and hygiene rules, and every unit has a person who decides when someone can enter.

Privacy

In imaging control rooms and operating rooms, screens and people are part of the scene. Nothing could reveal who a patient was.

Mixed light

Hospital spaces combine daylight, fluorescent tubes, LED features and coloured ambient light in MRI rooms. The set had to look consistent across buildings.

Our Approach

A room schedule agreed in advance

We worked through each building with the hospital's own team and photographed each space when it was free, or when the activity they wanted to show was taking place.

Entering clinical areas with the people who run them

Operating rooms, ICU and the embryology lab were photographed with the responsible staff present, following their rules. A laparoscopic procedure was photographed with the team's permission, without showing anyone's face.

Privacy checked image by image

Before delivery every frame was checked for screens, names and faces. On one CT workstation, patient details visible on the monitor were blurred in post production.

One colour standard across buildings

White balance and verticals were corrected so that lobbies, patient rooms and clinical areas from different buildings work as one set.

Selected Work

Deliverables

  • Edited images of public areas, patient rooms, suites and clinical areas
  • Exterior and aerial views of the buildings
  • Images of imaging equipment in use and at rest
  • Files prepared for web and print

Why This Matters

A hospital is judged on spaces most patients see only once, and on rooms they never see at all. Clear photographs of operating rooms, scanners and suites help a hospital explain what it offers before anyone arrives. The same method applies to hospitals and clinics in Spain. See our hospital and clinic photography service.
