Back in 1989 when the technology landscape was far less developed, Serge Belamant created the first version of blockchain technology and he also holds the patent. Belamant was born in Tulle, France and moved to South Africa as a teenager, where he learned to read and write English. Serge Belamant attended Highlands North High School for Boys in Johannesburg where he played rugby and chess. He was awarded Victor Ludorum in 1971 and placed sixth during the competitive South African Chess School Championships in 1972.

After graduating with an exemption to university, Belamant attended Witwatersrand University and the University of South Africa, studying engineering, computer science, applied mathematics and information systems. In 2003, Belamant was awarded an honorary PhD in Information Technology from Burkes University located on the Turks and Caicos Islands. Belamant started his career with a position at Matrix, a civil engineering company, in their BKSH division where he worked on finite element analysis and also analyzed water levels in dams throughout the RSA.

Serge Belamant led the technology efforts of the Pretoria, Witwatersrand and Vereeniging road planning project with remarkable results in digital mapping, statistical methods, enhanced road network analysis and graphic interfaces. After moving on to Control Data, Belamant became the Head Analyst and managed the ESKOM division, earning the Analyst of the Year award in 1980 and 1982. Belamant also worked for DataBank, Bancorp and SASWITCH. While at SASWITCH, he stepped in to resolve a difficult performance issue, which resulted in the development of a new National ATM switch for RSA banks.

Belamant departed SASWITCH in 1989, at which point he founded Net1 Technologies and was hired by Visa in 1995 to implement a security feature that involved the verification of personal identification numbers. Serge Belamant successfully completed the Chip Offline Pre-authorized Card (COPAC) project. Net1 Technologies was listed as a public company on the NASDAQ in 2005 and Belamant became the Chairman and CEO. The company has provided services in Ghana, Botswana, Russia, Burundi, Iraq, Namibia and other locations.

Today, Serge Belamant is focused on new endeavors as a developer and the founder of Zilch Technology Limited. He continues the development of blockchain technology.
