He says that reality TV shares a lot with regular programming. Both need to tell a story to viewers. Bennett Graebner says that the difference with reality TV is that the story needs to come out of real-life situations. Each story needs to have a beginning, middle, and end to it that is interesting. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes, such as editing, that result in the episodes that appear on TV (Eonline).

Bennett Graebner says that executive producing one of these shows requires working well with others, technical abilities, the ability to tell a story, and experience in the industry. It takes diverse skills to get an episode on the air that you can be proud of. “Love at First Kiss” was developed by Graebner for TLC. While a show like “The Bachelor” takes place over months, this new show features relationships in their opening moments. Two strangers are paired up and they kiss. If sparks fly they can move on to a two-minute date. If they are still interested in one another after that the show continues to follow the relationship for a bit.

He says they got the idea for this show from one that appears in the Netherlands. They changed things up from the original Deutsch version, though, such as letting people know more about each person that appears. Bennett Graebner says that when a person’s kiss doesn’t work out they will also sometimes bring that person back if they were interesting enough.
